What is Red List?

A Red List is essentially a tool to determine which species are most threatened. According to the IUCN, the goals of the IUCN Red List are to:

  • Identify and document those species most in need of conservation attention if global extinction rates are to be reduced; and
  • Provide a global index of the state of change of biodiversity.

Importance of the European Bryophyte Red List

This is an information tool to make decisions and to take actions for bryophytes conservation. A revised European Red List will be much used and consulted by all kinds of nature conservation practitioners, as well as decision makers, to plan biodiversity conservation actions. It will provide an essential tool for monitoring the impact of human land-use on the ecosystem services provided by this species group.
